Compact four-wheel drive vehicles comfortably fit 2 or 3 people, although some models can accommodate up to 5. In general 4WD vehicles are recommended for many roads in Costa Rica. Couples or small groups without much luggage, find that the compact 4WD rentals are economical and pragmatic vehicles, and they enable visitors to navigate essentially the entire country. In most cases the compact 4WD can easily handle crossing shallow rivers, ascending dirt roads and navigating Costa Rica’s bumpy back roads.
