Arenal Volcano erupted in 1968, and you can still see the hardened lava flow the eruption left behind. Because this volcano is still active, hikers aren’t allowed to get too close. But if it’s a clear day, you’ll be able to see some smoke billowing from the crater.

As you hike through the humid forest, your guide will show you some of the unusual species of ferns and bromeliads that grow in the area. You have a good chance of seeing monkeys, tropical birds, and leaf-cutter ants along the way.

After the hike, you’ll unwind in one of the nearby naturally heated hot springs. You can choose from several different hot springs in the area (although different rates apply). These hot springs are in beautifully landscaped spas that have nicely appointed restaurants where you’ll eat lunch. Visitors are also welcome to cozy up to the wet bars.

On the way back to Guanacaste, your group will stop for dinner at a restaurant in Tilarán.

What to Bring

Swim suit, hiking, binoculars, a camera, sunscreen, change of clothes, rain poncho, bug spray, sandals, a hat, and money for personal expenses (including a locker at the spa).

Traveler Comments

The tour operators were incredibly knowledgeable. They made stops along the way so that we could see monkeys and other key aspects of the countryside. The walk through the jungle was breathtaking and we found the tour very informative. Walking up through the paths created by the Arenal Volcano lava was also a great hike with lots to see. Meanwhile, Tabacon Springs is a very well manicured resort that is absolutely beautiful - a perfect and relaxing finale after the long hike. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour!
