The beautiful costal hamlet and beach of Sámara is paradise on Nicoya’s west coast. Known as one of the prettiest and safest beaches in all of Costa Rica, Sámara Beach (Playa Sámara) sand radiates a heavenly white; a wonderful contrast to the aquamarine water. A favorite amongst foreigners and wealthier ticos, Sámara’s 3 mile (5 km) coastline is encompassed by tropical flora and living coral, making this destination a quintessential beach community. The hamlet’s laidback vibe allows for some descent rest and relaxation as well—an almost universal characteristic of the Nicoya Peninsula.

Samara Costa Rica Information
The village offers a few services—stores, restaurants, Hotels, and a few bars. Nightlife can be found at one of town’s discos that truck on through the early morning. Sportfishing is popular off the coast, as is snorkeling and Scuba Diving around the coral environments. Swimming conditions are also idyllic in the calm costal waters that are nearly bathwater warm.
Chora Island just off the coast is home to swaths of avain fauna that can be easily viewed from a kayak. A short one mile (2 km) walk down the beach brings visitors to the tico hamlet of Matapalo, a great place for snorkeling.
Transportation to Sámara has been dramatically improved with the construction of the well-paved Road 150, which runs south from Nicoya. Air travel is available via the small airstrip just outside of town. Planes usually fly to Nosara and then Sámara from San José or Liberia. Buses run daily from Nicoya, Liberia, and San José as well.
Accommodations are available for whichever budget, however budget hostels and pensiónes are few.
