Tortuguero is the sea turtle capital of Costa Rica. Set along the Caribbean Coast and home to the Tortuguero National Park, this small town offers travelers one of the best chances to observe nesting sea turtles in Costa Rica. A variety of turtles come ashore at the beach here to lay their eggs, and you can take nighttime tours to watch the turtles nest and hatch. This area also has some of the best birding in the country—explore the canals on boat or in kayak and spot a range of tropical birds, as well as monkeys and crocodiles.
The Evergreen Lodge is set on a 5-acre (2-ha) piece of property. The hotel does a good job blending the structures of the lodge with the natural environment. Raised walkways extend between the various structures at the hotel, with trees and plants surrounding everything. It’s not uncommon to see monkeys, birds, and even sloths on the hotel property. Needless to say, nature enthusiasts will love this place. What’s more, the hotel is a short distance from the main entrance to the Tortuguero National Park.
The rooms are set in attractive wooden buildings and bungalows. The rooms are spacious and simply decorated. All are equipped with comfortable beds and private bathrooms with hot water showers. Ceiling fans keep the rooms a pleasant temperature. Bungalows have a private porch and are completely immersed in the rainforest—these are a good choice for travelers who want to wake up to the sounds of the jungle.
The Evergreen Lodge has a bar and restaurant. Guests can enjoy a number of ice-cold, refreshing drinks from the bar while looking out over the canal—this is truly one of the coolest places to kick back and unwind in all of Tortuguero. The restaurant serves up buffet-style meals that are included in the cost of a room. The dining room has soaring ceilings and a lovely atmosphere.
When you’re not out exploring Tortuguero, you can relax beside the turtle-shaped swimming pool or soak in the hot tub. You might even decide to book a canopy tour on the hotel’s own property. The canopy tour includes eight platforms and is an exciting way to experience the outdoors in Costa Rica.
