Poas Volcano, Doka Estate, and Sarchi Combo Tour
On the Poas-Doka-Sarchi Combo Tour, your day will begin with a guided walk through Poas Volcano National Park, home of an immense volcano crater that spans nearly a mile. If the fog clears, you will have the chance to see down into its colourful crater, which bubbles steam and gases. A well-maintained trail system explores the volcano rim and surrounding ecosystems. Along the park's cloud forest trails there are a number of small species inhabiting the cold, windy, and high-altitude environment. The area's most famous residents are the elusive resplendent quetzal and the unusual Poas green-yellow squirrel, which is found only in this park and nowhere else in the world. Other park trails lead to the Botos Lagoon, which fills extinct volcano crater nearby.
From Poas, you will continue your day with a visit to Doka Estate Coffee. Costa Rica is well known for its tasty gourmet coffee, and the Doka Estate is a 96-year-old "˜beneficio' (coffee mill). It has been owned and operated by three generations of the Vargas Family, and the coffee plantations on this extensive property cover almost 1410 hectares!! As you walk through the rows of coffee, your guide will help you learn first hand how the small coffee beans are harvested and processed. At the end you'll enjoy a fresh and delicious cup.
After walking the Poas trails and partaking in a coffee treat, your last stop of the day will be at the colourful town of Sarchi. This town is well known within Costa Rica for its pink-colored church. However, Sarchi's real fame comes from its amazing artisans. People from all over the world are familiar with the woodwork that is delicately produced by these Costa Rican locals. Their hand-made oxcarts and household items are often vibrantly painted and make great souvenirs.
