Irazu Volcano, Lankester Gardens, and Orosi Valley

The Irazu-Lankester-Orosi day tour begins with a visit to the city of Cartago, the first and former capital of Costa Rica. Cartago is home of La Basilica de Los Angeles, the most important and well-known church in the country. Every year on August 2nd, thousands of Costa Ricans make a pilgrimage to the church in hopes of healing a disease or asking a special favour of "La Negrita."  Inside, a large number of silver and gold pieces represent each person's request.

From Cartago, you will continue to the magnificent Irazu Volcano. As the country's highest active volcano, this giant rises 11,000 feet above sea level. On a clear day it is possible to see both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans from the top; however, such clear days are very rare. It is more typical for the summit to be covered in an enchanting and misty cloud.

After your time at Irazu Volcano, you will stop by Lankaster Botanical Gardens. On these 11 hectares of land you will find over 3,000 species of plants. In particular, a wide variety of orchids, with many shapes and colors, make up some of the gardens favorite cultivated species.

The final stop of the day is made in the colonial Orosi Valley, an area famous for having the oldest church in Costa Rica. Orosi's Catholic Church was built in 1743, and in 1920 it was declared a National Monument by the Costa Rican government.

About Irazu Volcano National Park

Irazu Volcano, still active, last made international headlines when it erupted in 1963 on the day that former US President John F. Kennedy visited the country. The eruption decimated crops in the area but left the soil enriched for decades to come. The last noticeable activity came in 1996, and since then Irazu has been a quiet giant. Reaching upward of 11,260 ft (3,432 m), Irazu is the tallest volcano in Costa Rica.
