Land Conservation
Best Western Irazú protects 4 acres of land, which represents 25% of its property. It also has gardens, recreational areas, and a composting zone.
Recycling Program
Best Western Irazú’s recycling program includes paper, glass, plastic, cardboard, aluminum, and organic waste for composting. Collection bins are located in the kitchen, bar, guest rooms, and throughout the hotel’s property. Talks with the hotel staff on the recycling program and solid waste management plan are given every 3 months and when new staff arrive.

Shampoos, conditioners, and lotions are placed in re-usable containers and refilled
100% biodegradable soap (laundry detergent, dish soap, and hand/body soap)
Environment friendly cleaning agents (certified by the Costa Rican Institute of Tourism)

All the paper is 100% recycled paper
Once a week the hotel analyzes the toxicity of its treated water over a 24-hour period, and every 4 months a lab visits the hotel to make adjustments and achieve the lowest percentage of toxicity possible.

Community Programs / Charity
Best Western Irazú supports a program called Education Plus (http://www.edplusint.org/portada.html,) which helps low-income students by providing financial assistance for the completion of their studies. The hotel also provides equipment for cleaning grass zones and gardens of the Alajuelita community. It donates linens to Asociación Hogar Carlos Ulloa. In the past, the hotel has helped the church of La Uruca with donations for children with scarce resources and made supply donations to the Red Cross for emergency relief efforts.
Additional Sustainability Steps
Hotel Best Western Irazu has its own Environmental Committee. The hotel aims to use products made from recycled materials, and the hotel staff are encouraged to reduce the use of paraffin/plastic cups or plastic mixers by using their own cups and spoons.
