"We liked San Jose and had fun there. We loved the restaurants and shopping and the museums we went to. We went to the Gold Museum and did quite a lot of walking downtown. The traffic is crazy but we liked the city a lot. I think anyone would find the city fascinating. We loved all the parks. It would be a great city for anyone who loves walking, parks, museums and shopping."

"Young adults or couples. Promenade was nice. Worth checking out. City had a slightly sketchy feel (could be the hours driving around lost) but people were very nice. If staying at the Presidente, get EXPLICIT directions -- GPS didn't really help."

"Enjoyed San Jose. Would not spend too long there. Felt safe in the daytime, less so at night. Would not have missed it. Enjoyed the fact that it was not designed for tourists."

"We have been coming to Costa Rica since 2006. We have seen many positive changes. Sometimes we hear others make negative comments about the litter, traffic ...etc & remind them that progress in other countries took time & still much to work on. I remember the 1960's in USA & the litter on our roads.. it takes time & there is NOTHING to be gained by COMPLAINING! I have NEVER had anyone in Costa Rica be rude to us... that makes a statement!"

"We were in San Jose for just one night. We found The Park restaurant, as a final treat for our trip - absolutely delicious! One does have to be careful, though, of pickpocketers and people running scams to get money."

"Hotel Presidente was right in the middle of the city where there are museums and great Tico restaurants to explore. We felt safe during the day, not so good at night."

"We stayed three nights in San Jose. If we could do it again; we'd probably only stay one. We did do the Cafe Brit tour which was fun. It was just a packed city and not much to do but walk around and look at the shops. "

"Check out the food at the Gran Hotel, especially their breakfast buffet. It was the best of the trip. They serve up the best black beans and rice I've ever had. The fresh fruit - especially the pineapple - is amazing. I found it difficult to navigate the streets; I kept getting turned around. Street signs were not always around. All in all, we enjoyed our stay in the city and we were glad that we chose to stay downtown."

"We visited our daughter's host family for dinner on our one evening there, so were able to experience fabulous local hospitality! We walked the main avenados from our hotel...service, while not overly friendly, was efficient - located a book store close to the hotel that specialised in books on Costa Rica in English!! THat was my best find and recommend it."

"We didn't venture away from our hotel (Marriott) due to work commitments, other than an organized tour. The tour was great…coffee plantations, waterfalls etc.

"We spent a couple of days in downtown San Jose. It's definitely a big city. Not much nature, but lots of good people watching. We were fortunate to have an acquaintance who was a local resident and he took us to some of the surrounding small towns to see some more natural areas and rural life."

"We spent very little time in San Jose so it is difficult to form an opinion. It is a big city with big city vices."

"Went to the Gold and Jade Museums and visited the National Theatre and an outdoor market. We did not like San Jose very much and did not feel particularly safe (American guidebooks strongly warn tourists, so I think we felt unsafe before we even arrived in San Jose). I would not recommend San Jose as a tourist destination, although everyone was polite and helpful at our hotel."
