Puerto Viejo offers up a mixture of unspoiled beaches, dense jungles and a thriving community, making it a desirable destination for people from around the globe. In fact, several nationalities are represented in Puerto Viejo, with everything from Jamaicans to Africans, Europeans to Canadians living in town. These global flavors can be experienced first hand in the restaurants, bars, shops, and hotels which make up Puerto Viejo. There are an assortment of restaurants to choose from, and several bars which frequently feature live calypso and reggae bands. The beaches of Puerto Viejo are beautiful and unspoiled, offering visitors their choice of black or white sand, and providing access to an idyllic Caribbean Ocean. Indeed, the ocean here is warm and clear, with conditions that are perfect for swimming, surfing, diving, and snorkeling. The jungle stretching to the sand is equally attractive - there are places for canopy tours, waterfall treks, and jungle hikes. With so much beauty and activity set amongst a peaceful and diverse community, visitors to Puerto Viejo may find themselves never wanting to leave.

The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel that borders a virtually uninhabited stretch of sand. It has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or  leisurely reading. A small river, inhabited by fish and turtles, flows through portions of the property, adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The accommodations consist of twelve beautiful guest rooms, which include private baths, fans, and free wireless internet. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views. There are, however, garden suites which are larger and come equipped with satellite TV and an open-air bathtub set in a private garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a filling breakfast during the morning and refreshing drinks throughout the day. An internet cafñ is available for those who need online access, and help with arranging transportation or booking tours is happily performed by the staff. Banana Azul also offers a variety of package options, which include visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions.
