Iguana Lodge Sustainability
Energy efficient light bulbs have been installed throughout the hotel
Refrigerators are energy-efficient models
Paths on the hotel property are lit with candles, and Iguana Lodge works very hard to have no lighting on the beach where it would affect turtle nesting
Water Conservation
Cards in the room let guests choose when they would like new linens and towels
Low-flow toilets in all bathrooms (max of 1.6 gallons/flush)
Dinning tables are set without table clothes
A drip irrigation system is used for the gardens
Land Conservation
8 acres of the hotel property is made up of gardens and untouched trees. This land represents approximately 80% of the hotel property. On the beach side, the hotel has a native species garden project.
Recycling Program
Iguana Lodge collects glass, plastic, aluminum, and organic compost throughout the hotel property, in the kitchen, and in all guest accommodations. A meeting is held twice a year to describe the recycling procedures with all thirty staff.
Waste/ Toxicity Reduction
Only durable and reusable drinking cups are provided
Shampoos, conditioners, and lotions are placed in re-usable containers and refilled
100% biodegradable soap (laundry detergent, dish soap, and hand/body soap)
Environment friendly Proquimia cleaning products
Green Certification/Awards
Iguana Lodge has earned a variety of award titles from the community for its participation in community projects.
Community Programs/Charity
Iguana Lodge built, runs, and finances the Puerto Jimenez public library, the only library on the Peninsula. It accepts Spanish book donations from lodge guests. It also runs the Todo Es Posible (Everything is Possible) program, which provides scholarships to highschool graduates from the Osa Peninsula. At present has sent over 45 students from the Osa to university. The lodge donates to a variety of projects including the Osa Campaign, the Save the Cats program, and community projects, such as Red Cross. The hotel encourages staff participation in community projects by authorizing paid days off for volunteer projects, and by organizing staff gift-giving for the less fortunate during Christmas.
Additional Sustainability Steps
Iguana Lodge founded and runs the Save the Osa Turtle Project (ASTO) on Playa Platanares. It hires guards to secure the beach at night.
