Black Turtle Lodge Sustainability

Renewable Energy
Black Turtle Lodge uses solar panels on the roof of the main house that provide 30% of the hotel’s electricity needs; these solar panels generate energy for the hotel’s lighting, pump, and kitchen refrigerators.

Energy Conservation
Linens and laundry are air-dried
CFL light bulbs are installed in all hotel units and main house
Candles are used along walkways instead of electric lighting

Water Conservation
Gray water drains out into the garden
Sheets are changed every other day
All dinning tables are set without table clothes

Land Conservation

Black Turtle Lodge protects 2 acres of land, approximately 60% of its property. The Lodge is also part of the local beach protection efforts.

Recycling Program
Black Turtle Lodge separates all paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum materials from the rooms and kitchen. Materials are taken to the local town recycling center. Food waste is given to local families for their pig farms.

Waste / Toxicity Reduction

Shampoos and conditioners are placed in reusable containers and refilled
No swimming pool

Additional Sustainability Steps
Approximately 95 percent of food served at the hotel is local and organic
