Low watt, floresent, and LED bulbs
Refrigerators, washer, and drier are energy efficient models
All lights are turned off by 9pm unless they are absolutely necessary
Water Conservation
All gray waters are recycled and used for irrigation
Guests are informed upon arrival of the hotel's policies for reuse of linens and towels
Low-flow toilets in all bathrooms (max of 1.6 gallons/flush)
Dinning tables are set without table clothes
Rainwater is collected for industrial uses during the dry season
Recycling Program
Una Ola’s recycling program includes glass, plastic, paper, aluminum, and organic material. Surf wax is also recycled and re-used.
Waste/ Toxicity Reduction
Only durable and reusable drinking cups are provided
Shampoos, conditioners, and lotions are placed in re-usable containers and refilled
100% biodegradable soap (laundry detergent, dish soap, and hand/body soap)
Community Programs/Charity
Una Ola Surf Resort supports the Costa Rican Federation de Surf, Surfrider Foundation of Tamarindo, CEPIA, and Leatherback Trust. Additionally, Una Ola provides surfing and ocean safety lessons to interested local children from Playa Grande and Matapalo. Employees are offered flexible working schedules (to surf at the best times) if they participate in the volunteer surf lesson program. In the future, Una Ola plans to host a yearly surf contest for the local kids as way of promoting a healthy and active surfing lifestyle.
Additional Sustainability Steps
About 50-75% of Una Ola’s produce is organic, and 100% comes from local farmers. The hotel has used only local employees to build, furnish and operate our hotel.
