We discovered this fact after getting lost on a maze of crater filled roads in the dark. Finally popping up at Blew Dogs hotel and hostel complex, we found ourselves in a surfing oasis. Blew Dogs is filed with American surfers, who drink Pilsen at the bar and commingle with the countless beautiful women. Say what’s up to Tony, the friendly face of the scene. It seems unlikely that such a plethora of posh accommodations awaits deep in the Costa Rican jungle.

The beach appears endless and has many little spots to paddle out. Guillones has playful waves and consistently receives swell. This is the only break I’ve surfed in a foreign country where the people are predominantly gringos. A 20 minute walk north is Palada, a rocky reef right that can only be surfed on higher tides. Camaronal is a 30 minute drive south and can be tricky to find. This wave is hollow and should be surfed by the more experienced.

Nosara general is a unique beach community because the nature reserve and zoning laws prevent construction near the beach. The surrounding landscape has not been built up… yet. Walk on skinny paths past howler monkeys and multi-colored land crabs to reach the ocean. The hills have their fair share of expats of German, American, and French origin, who call Nosara home. There are also a surprising number of surf shops where rentals are available.
