The Harmony has created a center that recycles 85% of the hotel’s total waste as well as materials brought by other hotels and businesses. The restaurant and juice bar compost raw food waste to make organic fertilizer for the landscape. In each guest room, there are bins for separating plastic, paper, glass, and aluminum. Guests are also welcome to join the regular beach clean-ups organized by Harmony staff.

Waste/ Toxicity Reduction

Shampoos, conditioners, and lotions are placed in re-usable containers and refilled
100% biodegradable soap (laundry detergent, dish soap, and hand/body soap)
Biodegradable cleaning products
Chlorine-free swimming pool with salt treatment system

Community Programs/Charity

The Harmony Hotel looks to give back to the Nosara community in many ways. Harmony staff members volunteer at Nosara’s local schools, offering mentorship, experiential learning, and career exploration in areas ranging from language to computer literacy. This is part of the Turning Hope into Reality Program, an effort to improve school infrastructure, equipment, and learning aids. Alongside Earth University, the Harmony is also participating in the creation of a waste management plan for the community at large. Harmony has been involved in environmental programs that include: Help the Howlers, a campaign to prevent electrocution of Howler monkeys on Nosara’s electrical lines; and Aiding in the Arribadas of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle Program, a non-profit initiative to help improve sea turtle habitat and curtail the poaching of their eggs.

Additional Sustainability Steps

Harmony has a policy of training local residents for positions at all levels of the hotel operations. It makes significant efforts to purchase organic, local food and coffee, and its electrical generator runs on a biodiesel blend. The hotel staff have been active participants in beach clean-ups to support Playa Guiones' environmental Blue Flag certification. Additionally Harmony hotel runs its own Plant a Tree Program, giving guests the chance to help offset carbon emissions by planting a regionally native tree with the garden staff.
