Montezuma is perfect for anyone looking to get a different perspective on the Costa Rican lifestyle. You may find fire dancers, Rastafarians, or jovial local craftsmen lounging about the town’s few streets. Also lining the streets are good restaurants – a scrumptious pizzeria and all-natural vegetarian café, to name a few – and a smattering of bars. The town hugs a long stretch of beach (Playa Grande) that’s perfect for relaxing, swimming, or surfing. What’s more, a 20-minute walk from downtown leads to a series of waterfalls and pools.
Translated, Hotel Atardecer means “Sunset Hotel.” True to its name, the hotel is privileged to have one of the best locations for watching sunsets. Located in the hills outside of town, Hotel Atardecer looks down onto the Gulf of Nicoya and its undulating waters. The hotel is surrounded by lush tropical gardens that host monkeys, birds, and horses. From the property, it’s a 5-minute drive to Montezuma. The Cabo Blanco Absolute Reserve – the country’s first national park – is a 15-minute drive, and the surfing beaches of Malpaís and Santa Teresa are a 25-minute drive.
Accommodations consist of four bungalows and one rental house. Each is wooden and has high ceilings and ample windows. Inside are a mini refrigerator (perfect for storing snacks, fruit or drinks), comfortable beds, and a private hot water bathroom. Sliding glass doors open onto an expansive covered deck. Replete with tables, chairs and a hammock, this deck is an ideal place to read or relax.
The hotel is one of the few in the area to offer room service, including a free continental breakfast served daily onto your deck. The hotel’s staff is extremely friendly and capable of helping you maximize your time in Montezuma. It is important to note, however, that you will need to have a car to get to and from the hotel.
