Energy Conservation
Energy efficient light bulbs
Runs an energy management program, in coordination with the Conservation Department of Costa Rica’s Electric Company, ICE.
Water Conservation
All water from the sinks, shower, and laundry is treated and reused to water the gardens
Signs in the rooms encourage guests to reuse towels and sheets
Water meters are used to measure usage and make adjustments
Recycling Program
Poco a Poco maintains a recycling program for inorganic materials. Organic wastes are used to produce fertilizer for the gardens. Signs about the hotel’s efforts on recycling advise guests and encourage them to help.
Waste/ Toxicity Reduction
Large, re-usable containers are preferred, and individual serving packages are avoided
Hotel provides biodegradable gel that can be used as shampoo or soap
Soap dispensers are available at showers and rest rooms.
Pool heating device is free of CFC`s
Disposable garbage bags are oxo-biodegradable.
Community Programs/Charity
Poco a Poco has supported the Program “Amigos de la Conservación” with monthly monetary donations to support education and operation needs for the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Preserve and Arenal–Tempisque Conservation Area. Additionally, the hotel makes small donations to local schools and high school programs when they need financial help, It has supported environmental educators who have worked with school children from La Lindora primary to plant trees around their classrooms. If necessary and asked for, the hotel provides staff to help in volunteer activities.
Additional Sustainability Steps
The hotel supports various reforestation programs sponsored by local organizations or by national initiatives. Staff and their families have planted native reforestation trees on the hotel property, as well as in back yards and farms and along the rivers and streams. Over 75% of the plants at our garden are native; the majority of them have English/ Spanish natural history tags.
