Renewable Energy
Solar panels at heat water for the rooms and Jacuzzi. The solar energy system was installed in 1996, and it is backed up with a gas system.

95% of the Lodge’s light bulbs are energy-efficient
Hair dryers are not kept in the rooms, but are offered at the front desk
Water Conservation
Biological gray water treatment plant (SINATRAR– by Agricultura Creativa S. A.)
Towels and linens are changed every other day or by request
Recycling Program
Monteverde Lodge has a long recycling program history, beginning in the early 1990’s. It won the national recycling award in 1994. The lodge collects paper, glass, plastic, cooking oil, and organic materials throughout the hotel property and in the kitchen. The organic materials are given to local pig farmers and kitchen oils are donated to a local school to make biodiesel for the school bus.
Waste/ Toxicity Reduction
Sewage treatment system that uses a mix of wild strain microorganisms to ferment solid and liquid waste, decontaminating the effluent in the septic and gray water system (Bio-Agua by Bio-Soluciones)
100% biodegradable soap (laundry detergent, dish soap, and hand/body soap)
Environment friendly cleaning products from AQL Soluciones Integrales S.A, Liquid Total Solutions C-4 CeK laundry detergent, Green Solution grease remover, and Cloar Leimar disinfectant
Fumigation is also performed with biodegradable products
No swimming pool
Community Programs/Charity
Monteverde Lodge makes various donations in the Monteverde community, particularly for environmental and cultural activities, such as money for the Galerón Cultural and Festival de Música. The lodge eagerly donates rooms and meals when the community asks for it.
