Energy Conservation
Some laundry is air-dried
Room keys turn on/off electricity (30 of the suite rooms)
Energy saving light bulbs have been installed in 80% of the hotel’s facilities
Motion detectors installed on public bathroom lights

Water Conservation

Waste water from the kitchen goes to a treatment plant certified by the Ministry of Public Health of Costa Rica and is later reused for the irrigation of 2000 square meters of gardens
Information in the rooms encourages guests to reuse towels and linens and save water
Low-flow toilets in all bathrooms (max of 1.6 gallons/flush)
Low-flow sinks and showerheads (max flow 2.75 gpm)
Rainwater is collected and purified; then it is used for laundry and hotel maintenance
Water saving devices are installed in the piping systems and valves
The piping system is checked daily for leaks

Land Conservation
Hotel Parador protects 7 acres of land; this represents 50% of its property. On this land there are hiking trails for the guests to enjoy.

Recycling Program

The recycling program at Hotel Parador includes aluminum, paper, glass, and plastic. The organic waste is used to produce fertilizer for the gardens. Collection containers are located throughout the hotel, kitchen, and guest rooms.

Only durable and reusable drinking cups are provided
Shampoos and conditioners are placed in re-usable containers and refilled
100% biodegradable soap
Certified biodegradable cleaning agents
Most of the containers for water, spirits, and soft drinks are recyclable
Gallon containers for amenities are stored and delivered back to suppliers
Hotel focuses on alternative uses for materials or equipment once they have fulfilled their basic function, often donating them to community groups

Community Programs / Charity

Hotel Parador makes annual financial donations to organizations such as Titi Conservation Alliance, COPAZ, Roberta Felix Foundation, and Manuel Antonio National Park. It also makes charitable donations of clothing, towels, linens, food, and more to the Nursing Home, Mata Palo High School, Corea School, La Inmaculada School, El Estadio School, Costa Rican Red Cross, and others. The hotel invites its staff to participate in various community programs through an internal newsletter.

Additional Sustainability Steps

Hotel Parador participates in the community beach cleaning program. It also helps with reforestation along the river banks of Rio Naranjo, helping to preserve this area as a biological corridor. At the hotel, guest room water heaters and 3 of the dryers work with natural gas.
