The three small beach towns of Santa Teresa, Playa Carmen and Mal Pais are often collectively  referred to as 'Mal Pais.' The northern end of this area has the boutique hotels, surf shops  and international eateries, along with several bars that manage to sustain a decent  nightlife. On the southern end sits the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, a sanctuary that protects  1,172 hectares of forest and houses a huge variety of animals, including howler, spider and  white-faced capuchin monkeys. Hikers with a keen eye also have the chance to spot traces of  ocelot and margay cats while hiking through the park.

With consistently good year-round surf, this slice of Costa Rica is best known for its waves.  The beach at Mal Pais boasts a super-hollow, well-rounded wave, although the rocks at low  tide can make it intimidating for beginning surfers. Down the beach, Playa Carmen has a long,  wide stretch of sand and a break that is best at a height of three feet overhead. When the  surf is good here, crowds can be a little invasive, but an inside drift usually spreads out  the wave-hungry pack. About a kilometer north of Playa Carmen, Santa Teresa is a stretch of  beach with wild, rocky outcroppings that extend 100 meters or more into the sea. Although the  rocks can be a little precarious to navigate, these outcroppings create some seriously heavy  barrels, and as a result, Santa Teresa is one of the best places to find waves in Costa Rica.  The town of Mal Pais has an abundance of surf-friendly services including several places  where beginners can take lessons.

In addition to surfing, a visit to Mal Pais ensures the opportunity to try several other  water sports, including scuba diving, sport fishing, kite surfing, and snorkeling. Visitors  to Mal Pais can also choose from a range of land-based activities including horseback riding,  mountain biking, and some spectacular hikes.

Hotel Playa Carmen is an intimate boutique hotel boasting all the amenities of a big beach  resort. The architecture of the hotel is ascetically pleasing, using clean lines and modern  shapes to create a serene, chilled-out atmosphere. Every one of its 26 guest rooms are  equipped with air conditioning, ceiling fan, satellite TV, mini bar, phone, safe-deposit box,  and wireless internet. The rooms, each painted a different shade of soft pastel, are  beautifully furnished with wood furniture and a subtle, classy décor. There are couches with  over-stuffed pillows and soft light fixtures that create private alcoves for reading and  relaxing. The bathrooms are large and luxurious. All of the rooms have a terrace, although  they differ notably in size and quality of view. The hotel is located 100 meters away from  its namesake, Playa Carmen, and is also within walking distance of Mal Pais and Santa Teresa.

The swimming pool and Jacuzzi area are gorgeous. Lounge chairs and parasols are available for  sun bathers, and a pool-side bar serves up chilled drinks. Free wireless internet is  available in all of the principle social spaces, including the pool area. A business center  with flat-screened monitors and printers allows travelers to stay savvy of business while  enjoying their time abroad. Additionally, there is a spa area where guests can receive  massages, as well as a wide range of health and beauty services.

The hotel has an on-site restaurant, Las Olas (Spanish for 'the waves'), where diners are  presented with a fine selection of cuisine. Las Olas' head chef often mixes Italian flavors  with local specialties, and has gained a reputation for creating dishes that can stimulate  every sense.

The restaurant’s wine selection is thorough and carefully researched. Complimentary breakfast  is served daily.
