"This hotel was booked when I asked to stay near Liberia on the last night at a cattle ranch for a more authentic experience than just the Hilton Garden Inn. The Trip Advisor's recommended Hacienda Guachipelin was not available. The hotel is in a very remote area near Liberia airport, and difficult to find. The grounds are beautiful, surrounded by lush bird and monkey-filled trees relative to this very dry terrain. The hotel staff was very helpful, but spoke very little English. The room was simple, but clean. There are no telephones in the rooms, and you feel quite isolated. Also, there seemed to be no other guests on this night. We were treated very well, had a lovely dinner and large breakfast. This felt like more of a "bed and breakfast" experience in someone's home, yet our room was at the far end of the hotel very isolated. There was also burning going on near the room overnight, making it very uncomfortable to breathe in the room. I think this hotel needs better marketing or a fresh perspective. Maybe it is busier at times, but it seems like this hotel once was a luxury destination with tours and more of a tourist experience. I appreciate the experience as more of an adventure on our last night in Costa Rica. I would recommend this hotel, with the clear understanding of what to expect. Also, it is so difficult to find, our taxi to the airport never showed up. However, the staff offered a ride in the hotel's car for the same cost of a taxi."

The town of Liberia is centrally located along the Interamericana Highway approximately an hour away from the coastline and many of the region's beach destinations, including Playas Tamarindo and Conchal. In addition to these beaches, Liberia is a short distance from a number of protected wildlife regions. Day trips can be made to Costa Rica's largest wetland sanctuary, Palo Verde National Park, where there are excellent birding opportunities. Rincon de la Vieja is a mountainous and active geothermal region, located 30 km from Liberia, where visitors can enjoy mud baths and a dip in scenic waterfalls.

Between Guanacaste's beaches and the shrouded mountains, an open stretch of big-sky country is home to Costa Rican "Sabanero" (cowboy) culture. In this open stretch, farms and ranches line the Interamericana, and Hotel La Plazuela can be found on Hacienda Rancho Gesling, a large cattle and sugar cane farm.

At Hotel La Plazuela, guests are invited to experience both the region's natural attractions and its cultural traditions. Guests can take a peaceful boat ride down the Tempisque River or ride on horseback through the surrounding mountains, forests, and valleys. Both tours offer great opportunities to spot wildlife- including deer, howler monkeys, iguanas, and many types of birds. The hotel also offers a small canopy tour with five cables for a total of 1000 meters. When it comes to fun and entertainment, however, its best to catch Hotel La Plazuela during one of its bullfighting shows, which take place in a small fenced in ring on the hotel property. Guests can safely watch this exciting entertainment from leveled steps, thus sharing in an authentic Guancaste experience.

The rustic design of Hotel La Plazuela reflects traditional construction styles of the region. The hotel has 16 comfortable rooms in a standard double or deluxe double. The outside courtyard features a large and refreshing swimming pool, while the hotel restaurant serves typical Costa Rican dishes.
