Golfito is the port of choice for anglers and sport fisherman who visit Costa Rica in search of the Pacific sailfish, marlin, and yellow fin tuna. An hour and a half south of Golfito is Playa Pavones, a beach that is widely considered as being one of the best surf destinations on Central America's Pacific coast. To the north of Golfito is Piedras Blancas National Park, a 14,000 hectare park that offers visitors an abundance of hiking trails and some seriously wonderful wildlife viewing. Also nearby is the Osa Península, an area that was once billed as "one of the most biologically intense places on Earth by National Geographic Magazine.

Owned and operated by a Costa Rican family dedicated to nature conservation, Gaviotas Resort has an atmosphere that is unbelievably serene. The landscaping around the resort uses native plant species to create a breezy, tropical feel, and well-groomed pathways wind through lush, green foliage, generating a sense of seclusion and tranquility. Rooms are simple and tasteful in decor, featuring terra-cotta floors and teak-wood furniture. Every room is equipped with a private hot water bathroom, air conditioning, mini-fridge, cable TV, and a small, private porch. Both individual rooms and villas are available, the latter of which are larger and furnished with a living room and kitchenette.

The pool area is built directly over the water, looking out upon an unperturbed blue expanse of ocean. The resort's on-site restaurant specializes in fresh seafood and barbecue buffets, and booth-style seating provides a private and comfortable dining experience for guests. The restaurant's interior is a red-brick inlay with accents of native wood. The bar is well-stocked with an extensive wine selection and cocktail list.
