Sirena Station, Corcovado National Park

Sirena Biological Station is located in the heart of the rainforest. It is the National Park's main station, and it is by far the largest. From here, a network of trails traverse some of the park's most pristine and dense vegetation. Jaguars, spider monkeys, and the Great Blue Heron are just a few examples of the hundreds of animal species that inhabit this forest region.

There are several ways to enter Sirena Station; but the most common is by sea. An hour-long boat ride from Drake Bay will introduce you to the landscape of this Costa Rican jewel, and it will bring you right to Sirena's park entrance. Once you have arrived, you'll hike along the Guanacaste Trail for approximately 2 km and intersect with the Patos Trail.   After a short distance on Los Patos, you'll turn onto Espaveles Trail for 2.5 km.

Your guide will help you spot a variety of interesting wildlife along the way, and you'll emerge from the rainforest just behind Sirena Station. After a brief stop at the Sirena Station, you will continue with the remaining portion of your hike along the Rio Claro Trail for 1 km. This trail tends to be much drier. At the end, you will meet with the boat and return to your hotel.

The first portion of the hike tends to be muddy because of the thick canopy, which traps humidity near the ground. Also, high tides can create stream crossings during some parts of the year. Therefore, hiking boots are highly recommended. Boots also provide better protection from forest bugs and creatures.

About Corcovado National Park

The crown jewel of Costa Rica's national park system, Corcovado National Park (Parque Nacional Corcovado), is comprised of an enormous 103,290 acres (41,800 ha) of tropical rainforest. The largest of Costa Rica's parks, it encompasses about a third of the Osa Peninsula and embraces an unbelievable amount of its biodiversity. Corcovado Park represents a very diverse population of flora and fauna, including 10% of the mammals found in the Americas. Declared a protected area in 1975 to prevent the harvest of precious resources, it is believed to have the largest concentration of macaws and virgin lowland rainforest in Central America. Also, it is one of the very few locations in Costa Rica that harbor the endangered squirrel monkey (the other most prominent being Manuel Antonio National Park).
