Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge Sustainability

Renewable Energy
Solar panels and hydroelectric power supply 80% of the hotel’s electricity. The “Pelton Wheel” turbine of the micro-hydroelectric system does not considerably alter the stream's flow.

Water Conservation
A notice in the rooms encourages reuse of linens and towels
Low-flow toilets in all bathrooms (max of 1.6 gallons/flush)
Low-flow showerheads (max flow 2.75 gpm)

Energy Conservation
Laundry is air-dried
Outdoor property lights use energy efficient bulbs and turn on with motion sensors
Signs in the rooms encourage guests to turn off lights when not in use

Land Conservation

Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge protects 150 acres of land, representing 20% of the hotel’s property.

Recycling Program
Glass, plastic, paper, aluminum materials, and organic waste are collected for recycling. Collection bins are located throughout the hotel property, kitchen, and guest rooms.

Waste / Toxicity Reduction
Only durable and reusable drinking cups are provided
Shampoos, conditioners, and lotions are placed in re-usable containers and refilled
100% biodegradable soap (laundry detergent, dish soap, and hand/body soap)
Environment friendly cleaning agents from Home Care products

Green Certifications / Awards

Amigo con Cambio Climatico (Friends of Climate Change), 2008
Programa Bandera Azul Ecologina and Bandera Azul Playa

Community Programs / Charity

Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge supports Fundacion Corcovado and makes charitable contributions to local schools. It financed the creation of a re-cycling center in Sierpe, and earnings from this recycling project go to help the local high school. Additionally, the hotel provides staff to help in the maintenance of the national park’s trails and stations and to provide their services as park rangers.

Additional Sustainability Steps
Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge bungalows are constructed to allow natural air circulation. The hot water for some bungalows comes from a hybrid solar convection and propane gas heater system. Other bungalows rely on propane gas heaters. (Propane gas is a by-product of oil drilling and burns relatively cleanly.) The lodge has also helped to earn Costa Rica's environmental blue flag recognition for the beach.
