Renewable Energy
Lapa Ríos Ecolodge uses solar panels to heat the water in the rooms. Bio-gas is also produced onsite, and it is used in the kitchen.

Energy Conservation
Laundry is air-dried
Energy efficient light bulbs throughout the whole property
All refrigeration equipment is a new energy efficient model
Outdoor lighting is kept to a minimum along trails and outside the bungalows

Water Conservation
Signs in the rooms to encourage guests to reuse towels and bed linen if possible.
Low-flow toilets in all bathrooms (max of 1.6 gallons/flush)
Low-flow sinks (max flow 2.75 gpm).

Land Conservation
Lapa Ríos Ecolodge is located on a property of approximately 1000 acres of which 975 acres are protected in their entirety. This property offers educational guided walks for guests; and environment research is also carried out onsite.

Recycling Program
The recycling program at Lapa Ríos Ecolodge includes paper, glass, plastic, and aluminum materials. The collection containers are located throughout the hotel and kitchen and staff areas. Organic wastes are composted and used to produce methane gas, which is then used for cooking in the kitchen.

Waste / Toxicity Reduction

Grease traps have been installed in the hotel and the staff kitchens
Only durable and reusable drinking cups are provided
Shampoos, conditioners, and lotions are placed in re-usable containers and refilled
100% biodegradable soap (laundry detergent, dish soap, and hand/body soap)
All cleaning agents are biodegradable
The swimming pool uses a salt treatment system instead of chlorine
Only natural fertilizers are used
The hotel does not use chemical pest control products

Community Programs / Charity
The Lapa Ríos Ecolodge's contributions to the community includes the construction and support of Carbonera School. The hotel is also involved in projects such as the Puerto Jiménez library as well as educational and conservation-related activities with the public school.

Additional Sustainability Steps
Lapa Ríos Ecolodge supports the Wild Cat Research Project, a project that studies the feline population density in the Osa Peninsula and their prey’s and also their behavior and other information with the use of cameras in order to protect them. This project began in 2006. Additionally, all materials used in construction of the hotel are renewable materials like bamboo and suita. The hotel generators run on biodiesel.
