I originally came to Monteverde on a three month volunteer project, however, I fell in love with this magical place, its amazing biodiversity and its warm, vibrant community and decided to stay... and of course, the weather and the coffee are better here than London!
Since then I have worked with several community development programs and non-profit organizations in the region and have become very familiar with the challenges of rural 'Tico' life.
Researching and writing on the history and culture of Costa Rica has been a fascinating and rewarding experience, giving me the opportunity to know and understand this tiny, peace-loving country and its gentle people far more intimately.
I have been both inspired and impressed by Costa Rica's continued commitment to environmental protection, sustainable development, democracy and social equality, at times in the face of severe economic adversity and political pressure.
I hope that in the years to come it is able to hold on to these achievements and serve as an example of a country able to achieve growth without arms or exploitation.
