The fascinating wet lands of Caño Negro are found in the Northern Zone, near the town of Los Chiles which is just kilometers from the border of Nicaragua. This zone is best known for being home to the Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica's most active, and the town of La Fortuna which boasts lush green vegetation and a lake. In recent years the region just north of the Volcano has been gaining in popularity amongst bird watchers and anglers who explore in the wetlands and rolling green pastures.

Cano Negro Information

The 10,000 acre Caño Negro Refuge is a remote tropical everglade with a large network of rivers and wildlife. It is home to 350 species of birds, as well as the emerald basilisk, river turtles, caimans, Jaguars, Ocelots, giant anteaters, monkeys, and many other wild creatures. Guides will take visitors on Bird Watching and fishing trips along the calm Rio Frio. The best time to visit is during the rainy season when the lake is full.

Though growing in popularity, accommodations are still sparse in Caño Negro. Many visitors reach the refuge by taking day trips from the popular town of La Fortuna where you’ll find an abundance of Hotels, restaurants and bars. In La Fortuna, you'll find the active Volcano, fantastic Hiking, Lake Arenal, which is known for its excellent wind Surfing and fishing, and the magnificent Tabacon Hot Springs. Also among popular activities in the surrounding area are Horseback riding, hanging bridges, Canopy Tours, and white water rafting.
